According to McCoy, [10] the release of their debut album, Zoon , was held back for several years due to disagreements with the record label. Zoon was eventually released in and featured a distinctly heavier sound [11] than McCoy's previous works.

On 15 August , McCoy and Pettitt held a press conference [12] at the Zillo Festival in Germany, announcing their future plans to collaborate under two separate monikers, Fields of the Nephilim along with the Wright brothers and The Nephilim an altered spelling of McCoy's solo project. According to different original band members, the band was rehearsing and writing the next Fields of the Nephilim album with the exception of Yates.

However, the awaited reunion of the original band line-up never happened. Between June and August , the band made four live appearances at European festivals, now featuring former Nefilim members Rippin and Miles , at Woodstage, Eurorock, Roskilde and M'era Luna music festivals.

The release was not authorised by the band, and consists of unfinished recordings from —, the reworkings of "Trees Come Down" and "Darkcell", and a previously unreleased demo by The Nefilim. The release was disowned by the band for many years, [14] and only one song from it, "From The Fire," has been performed live. The album had seven original songs, with a cover version of Zager and Evans 's " In the Year " included as a bonus track on the first copies.

Even if McCoy's cries and husked whispers don't appeal to all, once the listener gets past that to the music, the band simply goes off, incorporating their various influences -- especially a good dollop of pre-Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd think songs like "One of These Days" -- to create a massive blast of a record.

Buchanan again produces with a careful ear for maximum impact, whether it be the roaring rage of "Chord of Souls" or the minimal guitar and slight keyboard wash of "Celebrate"; McCoy's vocal on the latter is especially fine as a careful, calm brood that matches the music. Perhaps most surprising about the album is that it yielded an honest-to-goodness U. Top 40 hit with "Moonchild," which is very much in the vein of earlier songs like "Preacher Man" but with just enough of a catchier chorus and softer guitar part in the verse to make a wider mark.

Though the first part of the album is quite fine, including such longtime fan favorites as "The Watchman" and "Phobia," after "Moonchild" the record simply doesn't let up, building to a fantastic three-song conclusion. 3. Fields of the Nephilim have a huge and loyal fan base - in the 80's they dominated the indie charts, had a national #12 album and regular Top 40 entries, until they split at their height in ' Since this reformation album, Carl McCoy has headlined at many European festivals with his new Fields of the Nephilim lineup/5(6).
  4. Having built a considerable and passionate fanbase, the Nephilim approached their second album with confidence and a clutch of stunning new songs. The resulting, semi-self-titled release blows away the first by a mile (the art design alone, depicting an ancient, worn book with strange symbols, is a winner), being an elegantly produced and played monster of dark, powerful rock.9/
