Sonata for Violin and Piano no 6 in A major, Op. Sonata for Violin and Piano no 7 in C minor, Op. This is a Mozart whose creations should be staged at the Theatre of Dionysius in Athens. This is Mozart who will not sit docilely in the corner while "important" composers such as Chopin, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich hog the lime-light.
This is a Mozart who knew something of the extremities of the human condition. This is a Mozart who shuns a periwig. He has written a thought-provoking commentary. Subjectivity is king and all the more so when it is expressed so eloquently.
The integrity of his viewpoint cannot be gainsaid. For convenience, here is an extract: "The problem I have with the album is over-dramatising and over-romanticising Mozart. We are a little more sensitive to this today, than years ago.
Then it was still fashion to "put it on thick" to rescue Mozart from the stigma of being a peruqued master of rococo graciousness, and to emphasise his minor key compositions at the expense of the others. But the "demonic" quality of the opening of No 20, and the Beethovenish gestures of No 24, as played in this recording, put this work in an uncomfortably close proximity to the Eroica - just note the tremendous energy with which Markevitch presses the orchestra to release the last drop of dramatic juice throughout this longish episode prior to the piano's first entry.
It has been said that Mozart abhorred bad taste; and these Beethovenian mannerisms are, in Mozart speak, in bad taste, namely vastly exaggerating what the modest resources of Mozart's orchestra could not give of themselves. As such, I do not understand the reference to "the modest resources of Mozart's orchestra. This is what I do not understand. Why are these traits the sole preserve of Beethoven? Moreover, there is a nihilism to Mozart say, K and the slow movement of K which is but fleetingly present in his illustrious successor.
